SYNOPSIS: This is based on a true story. When Elizabeth's developmentally disabled sister Mary quits her meds and runs away in the dead of winter, she puts her acting career on hold and races home to find her, confronting negligent parents and the traumatic past that changed Mary from her cousin into her sister, into something more.
Mary’s role is based upon a real person who had surgeries at a young age that helped correct most of her mobility issues. Mary does not use a wheelchair.
Producers are committed to diversity, inclusion and authenticity. We strongly encourage performers with cerebral palsy or a developmental disability to apply for this role.
MARY: early to mid-20s, female, all ethnicities.
Shoot Date: 2 days between 3/5- 3/7
Mary has an enthusiasm she uses to cover her inner turmoil that makes her seem younger than her years. She has cerebral palsy and a developmental delay learning disability. Mary’s birth parents died when she was four months old, and she was left alone in their house for four days. Mary experienced additional trauma from this event. After she recovered and was released from the hospital, Mary was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth's parents. Elizabeth's parents were not around much when Mary was growing up, and Elizabeth was Mary's primary caregiver until she graduated from high school and left for Los Angeles to follow her dream of becoming an actress.
Now, as a young adult, Mary is also living with bipolar disorder. Mary is becoming increasingly unstable and disconnected from reality, and following an altercation with her adoptive mother, Mary experiences a psychotic break. She runs away from home and, days later, is found on the wintery streets of Denver. Elizabeth visits her in a psychiatric hospital, where Mary seems to be living in a fantasy world, but Mary is more aware than she lets on.
